How it works

Upload an image and adjust the quality slider. The tool re-encodes it in your browser and shows the new file size and the exact percentage reduction so you can see real savings, not guesses. Lower the quality until the size is small enough while the preview still looks good, then download.

Lossy vs lossless, and why size drops

JPG and WEBP are lossy formats: they discard visual detail the eye barely notices, which is where most of the size saving comes from. PNG is lossless and stays larger, so it is best for graphics with sharp edges or transparency rather than photos. Converting a photo from PNG to JPG or WEBP almost always produces a much smaller file.

Tips for smaller files

  • For photos, a quality of 70–85% usually looks identical to the original.
  • Converting to WEBP can shrink files further than JPG at the same quality.
  • Resize very large images before compressing — a 4000px photo rarely needs to stay that big.
  • Use PNG only when you need transparency or crisp line art.

When you need this

Meeting an upload size limit on a job portal or government form, speeding up a web page, or fitting an email attachment. To change dimensions instead of quality, use the image resizer; to change format, try PNG to JPG or JPG to WEBP.
