Percentage Calculator
Calculate a percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, and percentage increase or decrease.
Three ways to calculate
- X% of Y — find a percentage of a value, e.g. 20% of 200. Formula: (X ÷ 100) × Y.
- X is what % of Y — find what percentage one number is of another. Formula: (X ÷ Y) × 100.
- % change — the percentage increase or decrease between two values. Formula: ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100.
Worked examples
- 20% of 200 = (20 ÷ 100) × 200 = 40.
- 45 is what % of 180? = (45 ÷ 180) × 100 = 25%.
- A price rising from 200 to 240 is a +20% change; falling from 240 to 200 is about −16.7%.
Everyday uses
- Working out a tip, service charge or commission on a bill.
- Checking an exam score as a percentage of the total marks.
- Comparing a discounted price against the original.
- Measuring growth in sales, followers or savings over time.
