How to compress a PDF

  1. Upload your PDF file.
  2. Pick a compression level based on how small you need the result.
  3. Let the tool re-process the document in your browser.
  4. Download the optimised PDF.

What makes a PDF large

Most of a PDF's size comes from images — scanned pages and high-resolution photos in particular. Compression works by re-encoding those images at a lower resolution or quality. That is why an image-heavy or scanned PDF can shrink dramatically, while a text-only PDF is already small and will barely change.

When to compress

  • A PDF is too large to send as an email attachment.
  • An online form or job portal enforces an upload size limit.
  • You want a lighter file for faster sharing or storage.
  • You are combining many files and need to keep the total size down.

Related PDF tools

To combine files before or after compressing, use Merge PDF. To break a large PDF into smaller parts instead, use Split PDF. For scanned photo pages, compressing the images first with the image compressor can help.

Często zadawane pytania

It depends on the content. PDFs with large or scanned images compress the most, while text-only PDFs are already small and change little.
