Metric and imperial systems
The metric system is decimal — units scale by powers of ten (1 metre = 100 centimetres). The imperial system uses fixed historical ratios (1 foot = 12 inches, 1 mile = 5,280 feet). Converters bridge the two using exact factors, so you never have to remember the ratios yourself.
Why temperature is different
Most units convert with a single multiplier, but temperature scales have different zero points. Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit uses the formula (°C × 9/5) + 32, and Kelvin starts at absolute zero. The temperature converter applies these offset formulas and fully supports negative values.
Nepali land units
In the hilly regions land is measured in ropani, aana, paisa and daam, where 1 ropani = 16 aana, 1 aana = 4 paisa and 1 paisa = 4 daam. One ropani is roughly 5,476 square feet. Because these do not convert cleanly to a single metric factor, they get a dedicated converter.
